Greens Thank Cyclists (21st Aug 2006)

from St Albans Observer

CYCLISTS were thanked for their contribution to saving the environment with the gift of an organic apple from Green Party activists on Tuesday. Local party members handed out the healthy fruit, accompanied by leaflets extolling the virtues of bicycles, at St Albans City train station.

Spokesman Simon Grover said, "Cyclists help make the streets safer, reduce traffic congestion and avoid putting dangerous pollutants and greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Because of this the rest of us also benefit, so it is good to say 'thank you'.

"Normally the only reaction cyclists get is harassment from motorists. Cyclists get real rewards from going by bike, including better health, and they save the costs of fuel, wear and tear and parking that motorists pay".

The stunt was repeated by Green Party activists in other towns and cities in the Eastern Region.

Paul Harris will stand for the Green Party in the Borough Council election at Warners End on Thursday 16th of March.

Paul Harris will stand for the Green Party in the Borough Council election at Warners End on Thursday 16th of March.

He has lived in Hemel Hempstead since 1957 and has been a member of the Green Party for five years. Paul is a lecturer in Environmental Studies and Current Affairs. He is also co-ordinating chair of the Hemel Hempstead & District Friends of the Earth. He married a local girl, has two children and enjoys a passion for nature, particularly walking in the countryside.

Paul feels strongly that the Green Belt should be preserved, so would fight any move towards housing development between Warners End and Potten End, and wants also to protect Warners End Valley, Shrubhill Common and Northridge Park from development. He opposes too the expansion of Luton Airport which will inevitably lead to a massive increase in pollution over Hemel Hempstead.

He comments: "I want to know who gave permission for the development of industrial buildings so close to the Buncefield depot and will promote an alternative re-development of the site. Renewable energy generates work as well as power, just four wind turbines would provide energy for all of Warners End. There are no disasters with wind power!"

Paul will also campaign for local food for local consumption and strongly supports Dacorum becoming a Fairtrade borough together with a more environmentally responsible approach to the area including priority provision for cyclists and much greater co-ordination of train and bus services. As a Green he strongly supports the idea of the proposed Civic Centre to be run on renewable energy.

He totally opposes the contraction of the Hospital and wants much greater democracy locally, including an elected mayor and proportional representation.

Up to 10 protestors from the Green Party attended when the Highways agency came to Hemel Hempstead last Saturday at the Adeyfield Community Centre for a public exhibition on the widening of the M1 from the M25 to Luton.

DGP Press Release Monday 6th March 2006:

Up to 10 protestors from the Green Party attended when the Highways agency
came to Hemel Hempstead last Saturday at the Adeyfield Community Centre in the Queens Square with a public exhibition on the widening of the M1 from the M25 to Luton.

Councillor Alan Johnson spoke with many of the hundreds of residents who bought their concerns on the details of the 2-year project to the exhibition.

He said "We cannot ignore the issue of climate change, more bigger roads are not the solution and never will be. 25% more traffic on the M1 leads to far more traffic on the already congested roads leading through Hemel Hempstead
up to the motorway.

The Highways Agency are spending £298million on this scheme but many felt that the measures to help the environment in this project were little more than a very small token effort with chopped down trees already littering the motorway sides.

Helen Batchelor of Cleves Road was typical in expressing her concerns of the widened motorway now getting even closer to the burnt out fuel depot at Buncefield and questioned the 2 lane widening of the old M10 soon to be moved north of
Junction 8 possible to serve a re-built Buncefield.

Contacts:

Cllr Alan Johnson 01442 253945

www.nowideningm1.org.uk www.nowideningm1.org.uk

The Highways Agency information line 08457 504030 or www.highways.gov.uk
